Renaming of Colony Farm Regional Park
kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation and Metro Vancouver have reached an agreement that Colony Farm Regional Park and Colony Farm Road will be renamed.
During reconciliation discussions, Metro Vancouver heard from kʷikʷəƛ̓əm leaders, Elders and community members about the importance of these lands to kʷikʷəƛ̓əm history, culture and our future.
Metro Vancouver wishes to work with kʷikʷəƛ̓əm to return home a hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ name for the lands. The renaming of our lands from names associated with colonization to one that reflects kʷikʷəƛ̓əm history is a small, but important step towards rights recognition, improved relationships and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ revitalization.
With the Metro Vancouver Board convening on January 27th, 2023 for their first meeting, we have an opportunity to present them with a kʷikʷəƛ̓əm name as one of their first decisions of the year.
In forming a name, we want to follow our history and cultural protocols. Names in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ are more than just names. They connect places to important events, valued resources, spiritual locales and other knowledge. Names are a way that our history and values are carried forward on the land.
Drawing from the stories and history of our community, we propose three (3) names that are connected kʷikʷəƛ̓əm knowledge and history of Colony Farm lands as has been shared by kʷikʷəƛ̓əm Elders, past and present. The name with the most votes will be presented to Metro Vancouver as our preferred choice.
The vote on OneFeather will take place from Wednesday January 18th until Monday, January 23rd.
We look forward to working with you for this exciting opportunity for the new year!
